I purchased this drone after watching my brother get one for Christmas and flying it around for fun. As an aspiring photographer, this drone is a fantastic entry point into aerial photography, with a very high resolution camera and amazing stabilizer for such a low-priced model. The battery only lasts for ~20 minutes of flight time, but those 20 minutes are a blast. If you do end up purchasing one of these, or are seriously considering it, please familiarize yourself with all of the regulations of when and where you can/cannot fly -- there are some serious fines out there. Also - if you're thinking about using one of these for ANY kind of commercial purpose, know that you have to become a certified remote pilot before you can legally sell any products obtained with a drone.
In my opinion, the best entry-level drone for those who want to eventually get more serious with their drones, but also want to get their feet wet in the world of drones without having to put out almost $1K. It's better to buy the cheaper Phantom model NOW, and get better at flying and maneuvering as soon as possible, rather than waiting until you can afford a more expensive model, and being that much less experienced. Additionally, you have to consider the hidden costs of these drones - you'll certainly want more batteries, ND filters, an adequate case/backpack, and so on, all which are easier to acquire when your drone model is less expensive.
The is by far the best entry level drone available on the market. It's super reliable has a ton of features flies very fast and very far, the camera is phenomenal it's records high def 2.7k video and the photo stills look great as well. They do not cheat you with this drone just because it's the standard model doesn't mean it's the bare minimum. Dji gives you so much to work with on this drone such as intelligent flight modes like point of interest, follow me, orbit, waypoints etc. if you're using this to shoot videos take full advantage of the LOG profile they provide in the camera settings, color grade your footage on a computer and you'd be hard pressed to see the difference in quality between this and the phantom 3 pro model or the 4K. This drone is seriously a steal.
This is an incredible entry-level quadcopter. I have flown the Syma X5C, so I was used to flying quads. Right out of the box, I was able to take off, fly around, and land with no issues whatsoever. The video and photos I could capture were incredible from day one. I have had for three days now and I have been able to capture some incredible scenery from new perspectives. The DJI Phantom 3 Standard is very easy to fly. Especially with the intelligent flight modes. The return to home function gives me piece of mind when flying high and far. Even in wind this quad stays steady and I don't have to worry about it getting lost. I could not recommend this more!
The Standard will be just fine for most situations. The range has been perfect for me and the quality of video is more than enough for my needs. Buy this and you will be able to capture life in a whole new dimension.
Yes, this was an expensive Christmas present for my photography enthusiast but let me say this drone is legit! He did his "homework" by reading up on ALL types of drones, what they can do, their limits and capabilities, the various price points etc. He felt this drone could offer everything he was looking for at the price I was willing to pay. This is not a kids toy. It is very sophisticated and technical. My teenager loves it, but he has also spent plenty of time programming it and understanding how to operate it in order to get the most out of it. The video quality is amazing! He continues to impress me with the video and quality he can capture as he continues to get more and more familiar and experienced with it. He has only had it for a few weeks. It's not the "up in the air, doing tricks" kind of drone kids think of. It's an awesome tool for a serious outdoor photographer/adventurist. It brings photography and video making to a whole new level. Endless possibilities. Thank you DJI you did not disappoint!
Far and aways the best beginner into intermediate drone. And a stout little bugger! It flies very smoothly. The video is beautiful at 2.7k - unless you're into professional filmography and need 4k, the the video quality is more than enough for youtubers and hobbyists. Just check out standard 3 footage on youtube - it's beautiful. That was my main concern because I enjoy landscape videos. After checking out the footage of my first trial run, any reservation about picture/video quality was put to rest.
The only reason for four stars is that the micro SD card issue that has been going on for years is still not resolved. Some micro SD cards work, others do not. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. One micro SD card will work one day just fine, then the next day it won't, and after it doesn't, it never will again. I have had to go through three micro SD cards so far. The one that came with it stopped working as well! The one I have in now (SanDisk Extreme 32GB) formatted just fine and has been working fine for quite a few hours of flight. Hopefully my micro SD card troubles are over! It might be a random thing, maybe I got a semi-lemon, I don't know... There are forum complaints about it from as far back as 2015. You'd think in three years the issue could have been resolved by DJI.
Anyway, it's not too big of a deal. I haven't lost any footage or anything.
I still like it very much and would highly recommend the Phantom 3 Standard to a beginner or intermediate drone enthusiast, especially one on a budget - as they are not making the Standards anymore, these should eventually drop a little in price. Who knows...
I have had my Phantom 3 standard for about a week now and have flown about 15 flights. i am relatively new to flying quadracopters having previously flown an "Ominous" ($79, lightweight, durable, no camera) for a few weeks. The "ominous" took about 10 flights before I stopped crashing it...there was a learning curve because it's so light and the controls so much more sensitive than the Phantom. The Phantom is steady and easy to fly. Taking still pics is great and the shots look very nice.
New edit > : When I first reviewed this I noted that the video was "choppy" at times and seemed to have quick 1-2 second dropouts. Obviously, I saw that as a flaw. I had been viewing the videos on my iPhone through the GO app's "library". Well, this morning I plugged the memory card directly into my Mac and was pleased to see that the videos were flawless. In hindsight I now realize that the app was recording the wifi feed not the actual footage recorded on the card. So now I am happy that everything works fine. I am left with impression and criticism that this product needs way better documentation/online support if it really is to be breakthrough " drone" reaching more mainstream audiences than the RC hobbyist crowd. It's well built, functions fine, easy to fly and FUN, but you have to work like a dog online hunting through various websites and forums to really learn why some things do not work as you might expect. Another example..I found it almost impossible to remove the battery from the Phantom and was pretty sure I would break the arms at some point. Google/YouTube to the rescue with a homemade clip on a very effective technique.
Overall build quality is very high. Included instructions are minimal, so you reall have to hunt around to find tutorial videos and owners manuals. One other issue I had that was frustrating was having to do. Mandatory firmware update via wifi. After completing, I swapped to a fresh battery and headed to the elementary school around the corner for my first real flight other than in my driveway. "Mandatory firmware update required" popped up again. To make a long story short, apparently the firmware upgrade was for each BATTERY. After updating the second battery, everything was fine.
This is a fun "drone" to fly. Pretty easy to learn the flight controls and basic camera controls. I have an iPhone 6 and find the screen a little small for using the app which is packed with options, but it's a minor inconvenience, nothing serious. I also really have to find a sunshade for my phone/drone screen as it is almost impossible to see it bright sunlight, even with brightness maxed out.
This is my first drone. I did so much research on which one to get and settled on the P3 standard. It's a great drone for first time flyers like me. First two flights I stayed in beginner mode. I think it's 100 feet up 100 feet out. But now I'm pushing the 400 foot mark and flying at speeds of 32.7 mph. Or that's what the DJI GO App said. I take it out to my grandmas farm and film the land. It's nice to see the farm from several hundred feet up. That's where I took it for my maiden flight. Hardly any trees and and alot of crop fields. But of course it had to be cloudy that day.
I purchased a Used - Very Good dji 3 standard from amazon warehouse and so far im more than pleased. My dji did come looking new but had 2 problems.
1. the phone holder screw tightening section came cracked. so if i wanted to tighten the screws i couldn't and when i put my phone on the clamp its not safely held on. replacement part was $5 from china.
2. the memory card was inserted incorrectly to the point that it was jammed. i had no nails or any type of pliers to make it easy to remove. after a couple of minutes it came out and when inserted properly it clicked in.
After that rough start i installed the dji app on my lg g4 and updated the firmware and charged the battery and read the starter guide. very short read with basic info. i learned more from a youtube review. Installing the propellers is easy as color matching and spinning them in the direction indicated on the prop.
1st flight was a bit nerve racking. i calibrated and put it in beginners mode and stayed away from trees. took off and landed in automatic mode with the app.
2nd flight was easier as i took it to the park. i put the altitude above the trees and flew it around. it was so easy that my sister and 5 year old nephew flew it as long as they didn't touch the left stick. i havent tested how far it can go but only lost signal once briefly.
I have flown it several time since and no problems. eventually i registered it as its required by law and cost $5 for 3 years. airmap is a great app that lets you know if your allowed to fly in a location or not.
so thats my experience with a used dji p3s from amazon warehouse. For 250 it was a great purchase.
